Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1: 26

Dominion. That’s a pretty unusual word nowadays to describe ourselves, isn’t it? Not many of us are walking around each day thinking we are taking dominion of anything. But I really believe if you can learn to absorb this concept into your heart and mind, it will help you to believe you are who God says you are…to own the fact that God’s original intent was for you to have dominion in every area of your life.

If you stop and think about it, man has taken dominion over this earth. We’ve created ways to use its resources, to subdue the animals, to reap from the land, to travel around the globe, to go where we want to go and do what we want to do. But this scripture isn’t simply talking about having dominion over our material world. God is communicating a spirit to us, a way of thinking.

To be the YOU God envisioned, you’ve got to believe He has called you to have dominion and to be an overcomer. But don’t let the bigness of these words intimidate you. This simply means that whatever you are facing today: a difficult situation at work, an addiction, a challenge in your marriage, or the pressure of financial strain…you can walk through that adversity with the power of God. Rather than seeing yourself as a victim, God wants you to draw on His strength and His courage within you so that you can see yourself winning.

Having dominion today simply means choosing patience over frustration. It’s saying the kind word to your spouse or child when you really want to speak words of anger. It’s releasing your fears to God and choosing to trust Him instead of allowing yourself to be wrought up inside with worry. You can walk with dominion in your life. You just have to believe you are an overcomer.
